TBR Thursdays | Page 69 Test 10319 #page69test #tbrthursdays #orangecountyreads

Do you know about “the page 69 test”? The idea, floated by Canadian philosopher Marshall McLuhan, is that when you read page 69 of a book you know whether or not it’s for you.

In the book HOW TO READ A NOVEL, John Sutherland suggests that readers should apply the page 69 test.  He argues that “Dust jackets, blurbs, shout lines, critical acclaim all jostle for the reader’s attention.” Instead, he recommends applying the McLuhan (or, page 69, test).

Marshall McLuhan, the guru of The Gutenberg Galaxy (1962), recommends that the reader turn to page 69 of any book and read it. If you like that page, buy the book. It works.”

I thought it would be fun to test this theory and post a few from my TBR pile.

A Place For Us by Fatima Farheen Mirza

About the Book:

A Place for Us unfolds the lives of an Indian-American Muslim family, gathered together in their Californian hometown to celebrate the eldest daughter, Hadia’s, wedding – a match of love rather than tradition. It is here, on this momentous day, that Amar, the youngest of the siblings, reunites with his family for the first time in three years. Rafiq and Layla must now contend with the choices and betrayals that lead to their son’s estrangement – the reckoning of parents who strove to pass on their cultures and traditions to their children, and of children who in turn struggle to balance authenticity in themselves with loyalty to the home they came from.

  1. This book would pass my page 69 test. I wasn’t aware of this test till I started blogging a couple of years ago, but since then it has been passing a couple of times through my reading thread. It seems to be wildly popular among indecisive bookworms.

      1. Just a pity this book is not available on Kindle unlimited. I really cannot afford to buy all the book I would like to read and my life as a digital nomad turns a pilgrimage to a local library into a nightmare of red tape.

      2. You can read the page number from the bottom of the Kindle’s screen, if page numbers are available for the book you’re reading. Page numbers are displayed as “Page X of [Total]” to the left of the “Location” label.

Tell me what you think!
